Why did you give me the ability to shift gears myself in my car but while in that mode the car still shifts itself....WHAT’S THE POINT?!?!

Kinja'd!!!

Before people say I should’ve gotten a manual, the 2nd generation didn’t come with one :[

Why did you give me the ability to shift gears myself

They didn’t...they gave you a lever that would allow you to suggest things to the transmission. Much like suggesting, to a group, a restaurant for dinner...it only works out in your favor some of the time.

Also...doesn't it only do the 1-2 upshift and hold in all the other gears? That's how I remember my sister in laws behaving, but I could be mistaken.

yes auto 1-2 upshift and downshifting is purely by power of suggestion

Like quite a few Tiptronics, the one on my 08 TL does the same thing: it downshifts for you. And considering the torque steer on the non-LSD equipped TL is such that you’d want both hands on the wheel during hard acceleration (the reason why the Type-S has paddle shifters), the thing is pretty much useless.

Except in winter during very heavy snowfalls: forcing it to stay in a particular gear or gear range is useful.

So what’s the point? Marketing Bullshit.

The one in our Commander does what it’s told.

Yeah. Sadly, if it’s not 3 pedals, it’s a trap.

Maybe its for the best. Mazda’s “manumatic” in the 3 wouldn’t shift up or down in manual mode, so tons of people left it in a single gear and bounced off the limiter so long the car would potentially catch fire. I say leave automatics automatic.

My LR3 did the same thing. It would hold the gear for longer, but would still shift on its own.
